Storey County Wants Their Money Back and Then Some More!

No. 44 -- VIRGINIA AND TRUCKEE RAILWAY -- Nevada Railroad Reconstruction Chronicles

STOREY COUNTY WANTS THEIR TAX MONEY BACK, AND MORE!
12/18/09

Wouldn't it be nice if we could decide we don't like paying taxes, and then ask the IRS for our money back? RIGHT!

But Storey County is asking something similar. Years and years ago, Storey County became the only involved county where the voters approved a sales tax increase to fund the Virginia and Truckee Reconstruction project run by the Nevada Commission for the Reconstruction of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.

Of course back then the construction costs were estimated at $10 million, and the total project including buying out the private V&T Railroad, buying equipment and building facilities was only $20 million. Today the construction costs alone are over $70 million.

Perhaps Storey County doesn't feel they're getting their dollars worth, perhaps they have wised up and realized that local taxes are supposed to be spent in the local tax area. Here are two juicy agenda items from the snow-canceled V&T Reconstruction Commission meeting in December, 2009:

15. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION on a request from Storey County for $250,000 to match their $250,000 for the purchase of the old freight depot in Virginia City.

16. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION on a request from Storey County to give all of the tax collected from the date of action from the commission back to Storey County

Perhaps at the higher altitude, the politicians brains work better than in low-lying Carson City! IT'S ABOUT TIME!
